In the summer of 1999, in a small coastal Indian village, three teenage boys make elaborate holiday plans. Best friends since they were toddlers. Krushna, Prasad and Siddhesh can’t wait to play cricket, swim in the well, steal mangoes and speed away on endless bicycle rides. But their plans crumble when one of them is ordered off to Bombay city to learn English. Just when it seems like nothing could salvage their summer, a young girl visits the village. All of 16 and fluent in English, the city-bred Zai becomes their English teacher. In return, the boys reluctantly agree to take her sightseeing and
include her in all that they do. Before long, they’ve all fallen a little in love with her and what follows is a summer of first quarrels, first heartaches, first English words and new, poignant friendships.
